Nemisis by Anna Banks

Princess Sepora of Serubel is the last Forger in all the five kingdoms. The spectorium she creates provides energy for all, but now her father has found a way to weaponize it, and his intentions to incite war force her to flee his grasp. She escapes across enemy lines into the kingdom of Theoria, but her plans to hide are thwarted when she is captured and placed in the young king’s servitude.

Tarik has just taken over rulership of Theoria, and must now face a new plague sweeping through his kingdom and killing his citizens. The last thing he needs is a troublesome servant vying for his attention. But Mistress Sepora will not be ignored. When the two finally meet face-to-face, they form an unlikely bond that complicates life in ways neither of them could have imagined.

Sepora's gift may be able to save Tarik’s kingdom. But should she risk exposing herself and her growing feelings for her nemesis?

Another desert set drama, this one I received in the subscription box by FairyLoot a few months back otherwise I may never have come across it. With a hard-headed protagonist who knows what she wants and how she wishes to be treated and Tarik, a truth telling king of her rival nation. This book follows the whole enemies who fall in love story-line but this is built up on respect for each other, although hidden truths may pull them apart.

What I enjoy about this book is how the characters adapt to each other throughout as they learn their limits although Sepora is definitely very head strong and falls into certain traps very easily. Tarik is understanding and curious of Sepora although in all likely hood far to trusting.

Themes in this novel touch on romance, opposing kingdoms, slavery. The latter is touched on through concubines and the slave market where literally anyone can be sold for someone else to make a profit. Where this is severely frowned upon in today's culture it was not uncommon a few hundred years back for this to be common practise. This does not make it right by any means and I feel that Anna could have portrayed the severity of this, rather than the 'bought by prince and live comfortably' trope.

I might honestly pick up a sequel to this book as it intrigued me and I do wish to find out how their relationship will develop... or regress as plot points come forward and their lives are pushed in direction unplanned.
