Movie Review: The Fault in Our Stars

Summary: "I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, then all at once."
Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group.

Release date: out now

Review: Obviously from the title this was gonna be a gooey emotional yet tragic love story and I definitely wasn't going to see it because of all the hype behind it but I got asked to go so I did. I expected it to be crap and aimed towards the younger generation but I was so wrong.

At the beginning of the movie we are introduced to Hazel Grace Lancaster who manages to see the world for what it is and accepts that she's going to die. She is witty and intelligent and very likeable from the start. She worries about the real things in life like are her parents going to be okay after she's gone? She realises that their life revolves around her and her illness and hopes they will be okay when she's gone and will manage without her, not in a 'I'm the centre of the world, everyone worships me' kind of way but in the sense that it's her parents and their whole lives have been put on hold for the past 3 years.

She is forced to go to a cancer support group every week which may have been the best decision in her life as she meets Augustus Waters. I felt that Gus was a bit too cocky to begin with as they didn't even know each other yet his intense staring would put anyone off. As the movie progresses however we see he is charming and really likes Hazel Grace. He's the best thing for her and makes her remember to live her life again for the remaining god-knows how long.

Their relationship is complicated. It's obvious they both like each other but Hazel refuses to get too close to people since she never knows when her last day could be and doesn't want to cause too much pain when she's gone. Which is fair enough and is very mature for a 16 year old but they needed each other and it's evident from the effort they both put in.

Gus is great further on in the movie as we see him trying to help Hazel get questions to the end of her favourite book. He gets in contact with the reclusive author who agrees to meet them in Amsterdam. I'm not spoiling the story by explaining what happens when they are there but Gus offers to write her a sequel to the book just so she can get closure.

The effort Hazel puts into trying to be normal is amazing. She tries to keep up with everyone even if it puts her health at risk, she doesn't like being told she can't do something. This shows just how amazing her character and represents the strength some people have that even in their worst days they don't want to let anyone down.

Right I'm babbling so just going to say, the end was just oh my god. I don't cry at all especially not in public and at movies but I couldn't stop myself it was just so emotional.

I would recommend this movie to anyone, no matter what your pre-conception of it is it is definitely worth a watch. Just don't forget tissues.

Emma :)
